Our interactive workshops invite writers to engage with each other to develop new skills, sharpen established strengths, and build literary community. These workshops are currently virtual, and each workshop includes curated writing guides and resources to support your creative work long after the workshop has ended.

Our writing and literature classes are presented by our Creative Writing Society, designed and offered exclusively for and by Black women and women of color writers. Our classes feature a robust online platform and weekly Zoom meet-ups for a hybrid, virtual experience. These college-level writing courses use literary work by Black women and women of color writers as a foundation for studying and practicing craft.
Our Creative Writing Society classes are four-week, cohort classes with limited seating (10 writers max). Course materials and Zoom links will be sent to writers the week before classes begin.

Explore setting as a literary element of fiction that establishes both space and time in narrative movements. Through excerpted readings, introspective discussion questions, exploratory writing prompts, and a case study that intersects place and history, we’ll learn to identify the narrative techniques that create lasting, compelling scenes and use them to bring setting to the fore in our own writing. In this course, we explore memory, voice, and self to craft compelling memoir. Through selected readings, discussion, and writing prompts inspired by the intersection of memory and storytelling, we will acknowledge and work through the inherent challenges of writing memoir--trusting our memory, trusting our voice, and trusting the story.

Traversing Worlds is an introduction to writing speculative fiction. The course invites writers to distinguish speculative fiction from traditional literary fiction, explore a few of the subgenres, and focus on craft elements specific to the genre. Through interactive discussions and generative writing assignments, writers will write their own speculative fiction narratives informed by the coursework and class discussions. From Our Lips to Cosmos Ears is an interactive literature class inspired by "Nine Bar Blues" by Sheree Renee Thomas. Each week, writers will read selected stories from the collection then delve into discussion exploring the themes and craft elements in the each piece. Multi-media, selected readings, and writing prompts create an immersive experience into the creative, boundary-breaking work at the center of "Nine Bar Blues."

From Our Roots, Our Magic is an interactive literature class inspired by "Children of Blood and Bone" by Tomi Adeyemi. The course includes a close-reading of the selected text and presents discussion questions to challenge and inform our understanding of magical realism, mythology, religion, and culture as it relates to West African tradition and the African Diaspora. Through in-depth discussion and writing prompts, writers will engage the Adeyemi's work both as readers and as writers, with the goal of inspiring creative risk-taking and greater appreciation for fantasy and magic that centers Black characters and Black voices.

cREATIVE wRITING sOCIETY
The CREATIVE WRITING SOCIETY is a creative writing collective that offers an interactive online community in addition to beginner, intermediate, and master level writing courses exclusively for Black women writers and women writers of color.
Our coursework, curricula, and community are designed to introduce writers to the ancestor, elder, and contemporary work of Black women and women of color writers, and our society members, who are also black women and women of color writers, are encouraged and supported as they create and develop their own unique literary voices.
